Markup Guide
Our free markup calculator helps businesses, retailers, e-commerce sellers, freelancers and service providers calculate markup percentage, selling price, cost price, profit amount and profit margin.
Whether you know your product cost and desired markup or already have a selling price, the calculator can solve common pricing calculations instantly.
Markup is the amount added to the cost of a product or service to determine its selling price. When expressed as a percentage, markup compares profit with cost.
For example, if a product costs 100 and sells for 150, the profit is 50. The markup percentage is 50% because the 50 profit is divided by the 100 cost.
To calculate markup percentage, first subtract cost from selling price to find the profit amount. Then divide the profit by cost and multiply by 100.
Markup (%) = ((Selling Price โ Cost) รท Cost) ร 100
If you know the cost and desired markup percentage, multiply the cost by one plus the markup percentage expressed as a decimal.
Selling Price = Cost ร (1 + Markup รท 100)
For example, if cost is 100 and markup is 50%, the selling price is 150.
Markup and margin both describe profit but use different denominators. Markup divides profit by cost, while profit margin divides profit by selling price.
| Metric | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Original cost | 100 |
| Selling Price | Cost + Profit | 150 |
| Markup | Profit รท Cost | 50% |
| Margin | Profit รท Price | 33.33% |
To convert markup percentage to margin percentage, divide markup by 100 plus markup, then multiply by 100.
Margin (%) = Markup รท (100 + Markup) ร 100
To convert margin percentage to markup percentage, divide margin by 100 minus margin, then multiply by 100. Margin must be below 100%.
Markup (%) = Margin รท (100 โ Margin) ร 100
A markup calculator can be useful for retailers, wholesalers, e-commerce sellers, manufacturers, freelancers, agencies, contractors and service businesses that need to estimate selling prices from costs.
A markup calculation depends on the cost value entered. Depending on your pricing purpose, relevant costs may include product purchase cost, materials, manufacturing, packaging, shipping, platform fees, payment processing or other direct costs.
A markup percentage alone does not guarantee a particular level of overall business profitability. Operating expenses, taxes, discounts, returns and other costs may affect final profit.
