VAT Calculation Guide

Free Online VAT Calculator

Our free VAT calculator helps you calculate Value Added Tax from a net or gross amount. You can add VAT to a price, remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive amount, calculate the VAT component and find an implied VAT rate.

The calculator supports custom VAT percentages, making it suitable for general calculations where the user already knows the applicable rate for the relevant country, product, service or transaction.

What Is VAT?

VAT stands for Value Added Tax. It is a form of consumption tax used in many jurisdictions. Depending on local rules, VAT may apply at different rates to different categories of goods and services.

Because VAT rules and rates vary by jurisdiction and transaction type, users should verify the correct rate before relying on a calculation for invoicing, tax filing or compliance purposes.

How to Add VAT to a Net Amount

To add VAT, multiply the net amount by the VAT rate expressed as a decimal. This gives the VAT amount. Add that VAT amount to the original net price to calculate the gross VAT-inclusive total.

VAT Amount = Net Amount ร— (VAT Rate รท 100)

Gross Amount = Net Amount + VAT Amount

For example, if the net amount is 100 and the VAT rate is 20%, the VAT amount is 20 and the gross amount is 120.

How to Remove VAT from a Gross Amount

Removing VAT is not the same as simply subtracting the VAT percentage from the gross price. The gross amount already contains both the underlying net amount and VAT.

Net Amount = Gross Amount รท (1 + VAT Rate รท 100)

VAT Amount = Gross Amount โˆ’ Net Amount

For example, if a gross amount is 120 and the VAT rate is 20%, dividing 120 by 1.20 gives a net amount of 100. The included VAT amount is 20.

Net Price vs Gross Price

Term Meaning in This Calculator Example
Net Amount Price before VAT is added 100
VAT Amount Tax amount calculated at the selected rate 20
Gross Amount Total price including VAT 120

How to Calculate VAT Rate

If you know both the net amount and gross amount, you can calculate the implied VAT rate by dividing gross by net, subtracting one and multiplying the result by 100.

VAT Rate = ((Gross Amount รท Net Amount) โˆ’ 1) ร— 100

Who Can Use a VAT Calculator?

A VAT calculator may be useful for business owners, freelancers, accountants, bookkeepers, online sellers, retailers, contractors, students and consumers who need a quick estimate of VAT-inclusive or VAT-exclusive amounts.

Why VAT Rates Can Differ

VAT rates are not universal. They may differ by country, territory, product category, service type and tax treatment. Some supplies may use standard, reduced, zero or other special treatments depending on applicable law.

For this reason, the calculator allows a custom VAT percentage rather than assuming one rate applies everywhere.

Important VAT Calculation Notes

Results may differ from invoices or tax systems due to rounding methods, line-item calculations, currency precision and jurisdiction-specific tax rules. A business may also need to consider whether VAT applies to the particular supply at all.

This VAT calculator provides general estimates for informational and educational purposes only. It does not provide tax, accounting or legal advice.
