Maintenance calories are an estimate of the daily energy intake associated with maintaining current body weight when average energy intake and expenditure are balanced over time.
The calculator estimates this value by multiplying the resting energy estimate by the activity factor selected in the form.
The calculation takes place in two main stages. First, the MifflinβSt Jeor equation estimates resting energy requirements from weight, height, age and the sex-specific equation constant.
Second, the estimated resting value is multiplied by the selected activity factor to produce an approximate total daily energy expenditure.

When US units are selected, the calculator converts pounds to kilograms and total height in inches to centimeters before applying the energy equation.
