An age calculator helps determine the amount of time between a date of birth and another selected calendar date. Instead of estimating age from the difference between two year numbers, the calculator considers whether the relevant birthday and month boundaries have already occurred.
This online age calculator displays a calendar-based age breakdown in completed years, months and remaining days. It also provides additional elapsed-time summaries such as total days, derived hours and minutes, an approximate total number of weeks, and a month summary.
How Is Exact Age Calculated?
Exact age is calculated by comparing the date of birth with the selected target date. The calculation first determines complete years. It then finds complete calendar months after those years and counts the remaining calendar days.
This approach is more useful than dividing the total number of elapsed days by 365 because calendar years and months do not all contain the same number of days. Leap years can contain 366 days, while calendar months range from 28 to 31 days.
Calculate Age on a Specific Date
The Age At Date field allows you to calculate age on a selected date rather than only today. This can be useful when checking how old someone was on a past date or how old they will be on a future date.
For example, you can select a date associated with an application deadline, event or personal milestone and calculate the age corresponding to that date.
Age in Total Days, Weeks, Hours and Minutes
In addition to the standard years, months and days format, the calculator provides elapsed-time summaries. Total days are calculated from calendar dates, while hours and minutes are derived from that elapsed-day value. Total weeks are displayed as a whole-week approximation.
These values are useful for general information and comparison. The hour and minute totals assume complete elapsed calendar days rather than using an exact time of birth.
Next Birthday Countdown
When the selected calculation date is today, the tool can estimate how many calendar days remain until the next birthday. For birthdays on February 29, this page uses February 28 in non-leap years for the countdown. Other applications may use a different convention.
