Discount Calculation Guide
Our free discount calculator helps you calculate the final price of an item after a percentage discount. It also shows the amount saved, original price, sale price and discount percentage.
You can also use the calculator in reverse. If you know the final sale price and discount percentage, the reverse discount mode can calculate the estimated original price before the discount was applied.
A discount is a reduction from an original price. Discounts are commonly expressed as percentages. For example, a 20% discount means the price is reduced by 20% of the original amount.
Percentage discounts are frequently used in retail sales, online shopping, promotional campaigns, clearance events, business pricing and customer offers.
To calculate a discounted price, first multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100. This gives the amount saved. Then subtract the savings from the original price.
Savings = Original Price ร (Discount % รท 100)
Final Price = Original Price โ Savings
For example, if an item originally costs 100 and receives a 20% discount, the savings amount is 20. The final sale price is therefore 80.
If you know the original price and the final sale price, you can calculate the percentage discount. First subtract the sale price from the original price. Divide the savings by the original price and multiply by 100.
Discount % = ((Original Price โ Sale Price) รท Original Price) ร 100
For example, if the original price is 100 and the sale price is 75, the amount saved is 25. Dividing 25 by 100 and multiplying by 100 gives a 25% discount.
A reverse discount calculation is useful when you know the final price and the percentage discount but need to determine the original price.
Original Price = Sale Price รท (1 โ Discount % รท 100)
For example, if the final price is 80 after a 20% discount, divide 80 by 0.80. The original price is 100.
| Original Price | Discount | You Save | Final Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | 10% | 10 | 90 |
| 100 | 20% | 20 | 80 |
| 100 | 25% | 25 | 75 |
| 100 | 50% | 50 | 50 |
A discount calculator can be useful for shoppers, retailers, online sellers, business owners, marketing teams, students and anyone comparing original and sale prices.
It can help evaluate promotional offers, estimate customer savings, verify sale prices and compare discounts across different products.
The discount percentage represents the proportion of the original price being removed. The amount saved represents the actual monetary reduction.
For example, a 25% discount on 200 saves 50, while the same 25% discount on 1,000 saves 250. The percentage is identical, but the monetary savings are different because the original prices differ.
A basic percentage discount calculation does not automatically include taxes, shipping fees, service charges, coupon restrictions or additional promotions. The final checkout price may therefore differ from a simple discounted price.
This calculator provides mathematical estimates based on the values entered. Actual sale prices may differ due to taxes, fees, rounding methods, coupon terms, product exclusions or retailer-specific pricing rules.
