Time Calculation Guide

Free Online Time Duration Calculator

Our free time duration calculator helps you calculate the exact amount of elapsed time between two clock times. Enter a start time and an end time to view the difference in hours, minutes and seconds.

The calculator is useful for work schedules, study sessions, travel planning, meetings, exercise sessions, events, tasks and many other everyday time calculations.

How to Calculate Time Duration

A time duration is the amount of elapsed time between a starting point and an ending point. To calculate it, both times can first be converted into a common unit such as seconds.

For example, hours can be converted to seconds by multiplying by 3,600, while minutes can be converted by multiplying by 60. After conversion, the start value can be subtracted from the end value.

Calculate Hours Between Two Times

The calculator can determine the total number of hours between two clock times. The result is also shown as decimal hours, which can be useful for schedules and general time tracking.

For example, a duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes is equivalent to 2.5 decimal hours.

Calculate Minutes Between Two Times

You can use the total minutes result when you need one numeric value for the complete duration. This can be useful for appointments, classes, meetings and task tracking.

A duration of 1 hour and 45 minutes, for example, equals 105 total minutes.

Calculate Seconds Between Two Times

For more precise calculations, the tool also displays the complete duration in total seconds. This is useful for short events, technical tasks, experiments and detailed timing comparisons.

How Does Overnight Time Calculation Work?

An overnight duration occurs when the end time is on the following day. For example, a work shift may begin at 10:00 PM and finish at 6:00 AM the next morning.

In Forward / Overnight mode, when the ending clock time is earlier than the starting clock time, the calculator treats the end as occurring on the next day.

Absolute Difference vs Overnight Duration

Absolute difference calculates the positive distance between two clock values without assuming that either time belongs to the next day.

Overnight mode instead follows time forward. If the end time is earlier than the start time, it assumes that midnight has been crossed.

Understanding 24-Hour Time Format

This calculator uses 24-hour time input. Hours range from 00 to 23, while minutes and seconds range from 00 to 59.

For example, 9:00 AM is written as 09:00, 3:30 PM is written as 15:30 and 11:45 PM is written as 23:45.

Common Uses for a Time Duration Calculator

A time duration calculator can help with work shifts, study periods, exercise sessions, meetings, travel times, project tasks, events, appointments and personal schedules.

It can also be useful when checking how long an activity lasted or converting a duration into total minutes or total seconds.

Time Duration for Work and Scheduling

Time calculations are commonly used for schedules and work periods. By entering a starting and ending time, you can quickly estimate the complete elapsed duration.

If breaks must be deducted or multiple work periods must be combined, a dedicated work-hours or timesheet calculator may be more appropriate.

Time Calculation Tip

Use Absolute Difference when you only need the positive distance between two clock times. Use Forward / Overnight mode when the duration crosses midnight into the next day.
