The Add Line Numbers tool automatically inserts sequential numbers before every line of multiline text. Instead of manually typing numbers one line at a time, you can process an entire list or text block instantly.

The tool is useful for numbered lists, notes, instructions, transcripts, code examples, logs, data rows and other line-based content. You can customize the starting value, increment, separator and number width.

How to Number Every Line of Text

Paste your text into the input box and choose your preferred numbering settings. Each line can receive a sequential number such as 1, 2, 3 or a padded format such as 001, 002 and 003.

The output updates automatically when live preview is enabled. You can then copy the numbered content or download it as a plain text file.

Choose a Custom Starting Number

Numbering does not always need to begin at one. You can start from any integer. For example, a continuation of an existing list might begin at 11, 51 or 101.

Use a Custom Number Increment

The increment setting controls how much the number changes after each numbered line. An increment of one creates 1, 2, 3 and 4. An increment of five creates 1, 6, 11 and 16 when starting from one.

Add Leading Zeros to Line Numbers

Zero padding can make numbered data easier to scan and sort visually. Instead of 1, 2 and 3, you can generate formats such as 01, 02, 03 or 001, 002, 003.

Customize the Number Separator

The separator appears between the generated number and the original line. Common formats include a period, closing parenthesis, colon, dash, vertical bar or simple whitespace.

Skip Blank Lines When Numbering Text

When Skip Empty Lines is enabled, blank lines remain unchanged and do not consume a sequence number. This is useful when your content contains paragraphs or intentional visual spacing.

Number Code, Logs and Technical Text

Line numbers can help when discussing code snippets, application logs, configuration examples or technical text. They make it easier to refer to specific lines during reviews and discussions.

Generated numbers become part of the text itself, so remove them before using the content as executable source code unless line prefixes are intentionally required.

Browser-Based Line Numbering
