Final Grade Formula
The calculator uses your current course grade, target grade and final exam weighting.

Enter the overall course percentage you want to achieve.
Enter how much the final exam contributes to your total course grade.
Mathematics
Use this formula when you know your current grade and want to reach a specific target grade.
F = [T โ C(1 โ w)] รท w
F = required final exam score
T = target overall course grade
C = current course grade
w = final exam weight as a decimal
Use this formula after taking your final exam when you know the score you earned.
G = C(1 โ w) + Fw
G = overall course grade
C = current course grade
F = actual final exam score
w = final exam weight as a decimal
Worked Example
Suppose your current grade is 85%, you want a 90% course grade and the final is worth 40%.
Current Grade
85%
Target Grade
90%
Final Weight
40%
Step 1
Convert final weight: 40% = 0.40
Step 2
F = [90 โ 85(1 โ 0.40)] รท 0.40
Step 3
F = [90 โ 51] รท 0.40
Result
97.50%
You need 97.50% on the final exam to finish the course with a 90% overall grade.

A final grade calculator is an educational tool that uses weighted grade mathematics to estimate the score required on a final exam. It is useful when your final exam contributes a known percentage to your total course result.
The answer depends on three values: your current course grade, the overall grade you want to achieve and the percentage weight of the final exam. A heavily weighted final can change your overall course result more than a lightly weighted final.
Final exam weight is the percentage of your overall course grade contributed by the final exam. For example, if your final is worth 30 percent, the work completed before the final contributes the remaining 70 percent under the standard weighted model used by this calculator.
If the calculator returns a required score above 100 percent, your target grade is generally not mathematically reachable through the final exam alone under the values entered. Extra credit, grade adjustments or other course policies could change the situation, so check your syllabus.
A required score of zero or less means the entered target is already mathematically secured under the basic weighted model, even if the final exam score were zero. Course rules may still require attendance or completion of the final.
The greater the final exam weight, the more influence the exam has on your overall course grade. A final worth 40 percent can move your course average substantially, while a final worth 10 percent usually has a smaller effect.
This tool can be used by school students, college students, university students, teachers, tutors and anyone working with a percentage-based weighted grading system.
Results are estimates based on a standard weighted average model. Your official grade may differ because instructors and institutions can use curves, dropped scores, bonus marks, extra credit, minimum exam requirements, rounding policies or other grading rules.
