Decimal hours express time as a decimal number rather than hours and minutes. This format is commonly useful for timesheets, invoicing and calculations involving hourly rates.

How Does the Calculator Handle Overnight Shifts?

An overnight shift begins on one calendar day and ends on the next. For example, a shift from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM crosses midnight.

When the entered end time is earlier than the start time, this calculator automatically treats the end time as occurring on the following day. Break time is then deducted from the total shift duration.

How Is Overtime Calculated?

The calculator uses the overtime threshold entered in the settings. If total calculated hours exceed that threshold, the excess is displayed as overtime.

For estimated pay, regular hours use the base hourly rate and overtime hours use the selected multiplier. Actual overtime eligibility and calculation methods can vary by jurisdiction, employer and contract.
